'Black troops only' is not bad - it's very good. I don't think you understand. It was the opposite of what the US Military wanted, British humour - meaning white US soldiers could not get in for a drink.

My father was in a ship in June 1944 about two weeks after D-day going to France. He was appalled and astonished by the abuse white US soldiers hurled at black GIs. To get some relief from the oppressive conditions below the troops were allowed in rotation to go on deck. Two groups of soldiers of different races were not allowed to be on deck together because of the problems the white racists caused. My dad said that it was one of the dumbest things he had ever seen. In a few hours or days the GIs could be in battle (as my father was against the Waffen SS) and reliant on each other for survival. The possibility that one group of soldiers would not support another for racist reasons was sheer lunacy.
